The Lakes Bluegrass Festival has secured a permanent new home just 1/2 mile north of the previous location and the first festival will be held there August 25-29, 2021. The location is called the Lakes Music and Events Park and the vision is to one day host other music and community events at the park. Click here for pictures and videos of the new location!
In August of 2019, the Pine River Area Foundation
(PRAF—a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and owner of the Lakes Bluegrass Festival) purchased 23.8 acres of land less than a mile north of the Cass County Fairgrounds where the festival has been held for 9 years. The property is on the west side of Highway 371 and the Paul Bunyan Trail borders the east side of the property. Click here to donate to the new site improvements.
Q1. Why is the festival moving?
A1. While there are a number of reasons the PRAF Board has been seeking a new location for the festival, the most fundamental reason is that we have outgrown the fairgrounds.
Q2. How does the space compare to the current location at the fairgrounds?
A2. The current location contains about 15 acres of which about half contains buildings or unusable space (such as the dirt rodeo area and the space used for the fair mud run). The festival uses an estimated 7-8 acres of the fairgrounds. The new location is 23.8 acres and all the land is level to gently rolling high ground with excellent drainage. The land was previously a golf course and has an established grass covering and beautiful pine trees making it an ideal festival location.
Q3. Is there infrastructure for the festival at the new location?
A3. The location is bare land and our team is putting together a site plan to develop the necessary infrastructure and associated costs. However, there is ample electrical service bordering the property for our intended use. There is also municipal sewer running on the east border for eventual shower house/RV dump. Water will be easily obtainable.
Q4. Will there be camping?
A4. Yes! Camping is an essential part of the Lakes Bluegrass Festival. At its current location there are 145 reservable campsites of which 105 have electricity. Our vision is to eventually have 200 electrical campsites that will be 75% larger than the fairground sites, with most having trees on site. Primitive camping areas among the pines are plentiful as well. (see the separate article on camping).
Q5. What are the plans to pay for the new site and improvements?
A5. Two major donors have covered the down-payment on the property. The balance will be financed by a Contract for Deed with interest only payments for 5 years. We will be reaching out to the community and our bluegrass fans to help with additional needs for infrastructure and site improvements (see article on “How Can I Help”).
This new property will help secure the long-term success of the Lakes Bluegrass Festival and eliminate the need to ever move again. We appreciate your support and hope you share in our enthusiasm for our new, permanent home!
